AJL - Associations Junior League (Junior Pennant)
Time & Location
About the Event
We are hoping that AJL will commence August 30th but until we hear otherwise, we do need to start organising teams in the hope the season does go ahead.
There will be a few small differences with the season this year:
· At least at first, clubhouses will not need to open outside of toilets and afternoon tea will be done away with. There would have to be no physical distancing restrictions to require morning tea again. We normally want our competitions to be social, but our message this season will be “Get in, Play, Get out”. Spectators will also be encouraged to be at a minimum – one per player max, and preferably less.
· To qualify, players must have played six matches in association competition between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020, or have been registered as a full-time player on a winter team and play at least once before the AJL season starts. We are taking a practical approach to player eligibility this season, but you will need to be prepared to prove that a player would have played at least six times if they have not been able to.
· There will not be the 12 and under Blockbuster rounds at Boroondara, both for safety reasons and for cost-saving ones. It doesn’t make sense from a health perspective currently to plan a large, social get-together at this time.
Registration must be in by FRIDAY JULY 26th. Keep in mind Australian Ranking tournaments will not be resuming in Victoria until September school holidays, so AJL is a perfect way to get strong match play for your players in the interim.
AJL is a competition run by Tennis Victoria and is played on a Sunday morning throughout metropolitan Melbourne (and possibly Geelong). Players selected will be representing the Peninsula Tennis Association, not their club, and the PTA’s home venue is still to be confirmed.
This season we are aiming to enter a team (or two) in every age group with the idea of all players being of a similar ability within each team. Everyone is welcome to enter as we can enter an A team, B team & C team etc but we will stubmit our strongest possible teams.
The season will commence on Sunday 16th August 2019. We haven't received a time table yet but believe there are no matches on the term 3 school holidays or Melbourne Cup weekend. Matches will start at 8.30am sharp and will finish by 1.00pm. Famlies will not have to provide morning tea.
There will be no cost to families for entering and a PTA top will be provided at no cost as this must be worn every week.
Players will be selected on standard and if we have enough players then we will have more then one team in each age group. Teams are graded from “A” to approximately “ C” depending on how many teams are entered from all the Associations as there can be more than one section in each age group (eg. A section, B section, C section etc).
The age groups are: 10/u Mixed (any combination of boys & girls), 12/u (boys & girls teams), 14/u (boys & girls teams), 16/u (boys & girls teams) and 18/u (mixed – 2 boys & 2 girls). All teams will have 4 players each week but we want to have 5 or 6 players in every team to ensure we always have a spare player as life can get busy for some families. Any player nominating is expected to be available every week.
You will play a singles and doubles match. Singles are best of 2 sets with a 10 point tie break as a deciding third set and doubles are a single set to 8 games with a tie break at 8 all.
If the boys from our 16&U team last year are now too old, there is an 18&U mixed section where you need 2 boys and 2 girls so the boys just need to invite some girls to join in!
Players must be of age as of 31st December, 2020.
We know we have some amazing players in our association, so please ensure those players gets this email as we want to get our strongest teams together for each age group.
Hopefully the above makes sense but if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact either Julia or Anne.
